Aethelflaed Collection

This collection focuses on Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians, daughter of Alfred the Great, King of Anglo-Saxon Wessex. Aethelflaed was born around 870 AD. at the height of the Viking invasions of England. Aethelflaed ruled Mercia and her brother Edward, the new king of Wessex, continued Alfred’s work in defeating the Vikings and taking the land back for the Anglo Saxons.

Few women would have had the power that Aethelflaed held, she is thought to be the only woman known to have ruled in her own right at this time. Her exploits are recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, yet the history books have largely forgotten about her. Despite the work she did to take back what would become England. This series of work tells the story of Aethelflaed’s life, through a set of paper cut paintings, hand painted plates and postcards that cover the story of her life, with corresponding information on the back.
